Volterra – View from Park

After a quick tour of the Etruscan Museum (the 4-6,000 year old array of tools was particularly interesting as they were remarkably varied and advanced), I ended up at the far end of town. I decided to climb the hill to the fortress to get my bearings and found a big park used by the locals with a spectacular view of the town and surrounding countryside and an archeological dig. Volterra was one of the 12 Etruscan cities and has been settled since before recorded history, first by the Etruscans, who were overtaken by the Romans who were in turn overtaken by…..as were of most towns we’ve seen in Italy. The warring city states unified only 150 years ago and people in the different regions didn’t completely adopt the Italian language of the Veneto until after WW2. I continue to be amazed by the huge differences from one region to another, especially in wine and food.
