Siena – Duomo

I visited the Duomo on a rainy afternoon. It was lovely, as every church has been, and every inch was decorated, again as I have come to expect. The floors were especially interesting, with complex scenes done in marble with grooved black outlines; a different technique than I’ve seen elsewhere. I was especially impressed by the brilliant ceiling in the Biblioteque and the large pages of the illustrated manuscripts around the walls. St Catherine is venerated here and I find the enthusiasm devoted to viewing her finger and head disquieting. If religion is all about the spirit, why is so much attention paid to bits of Saint’s bodies?
