Siena - Il Campo
Il Campo is the heart of Siena, not only for tourists but also for the people who live there as well. Every time I passed by, the cafes were full and people were sitting around the fountain or on the sloping cobble-stone plaza enjoying a gelato. Around the edge is a narrow race track where a traditional, and highly competitive, horse race is held twice a year. Champions representing 12 of the 17 districts of Siena compete to a packed audience standing in the middle and on grandstands around the edges. While I was there, an Italian team celebrating some sort of victory celebrated in one of the bars singing, among other things, “Roll out the Barrel” in boozy Italian. It reminded me of the front of Mike’s office building on Picnic Day, although the costumes they wore were more interesting
