Orvieto (again) - Tenuta Le Velette
We continued to follow the Tiber river from Denuta through the mountains toward Orvieto. We stopped at a 150-year old vineyard (Tenuta Le Velette) located high on a hill to the south of Orvieto. Cecelia, one of the two descendants who now run the business, told us the story of the place and took us through the amazing network of caves carved from tuff 20 feet and more below the buildings. We tried four of their wines, a light white (Berganorio Orvieto Classico), wonderful Sauvignon Blanc (Traluce), red San Giovase (Calanco) and sweet dessert (Il Raggio) all served with appropriate little servings of wonderful food. The desert – Torte della Nona (Grandmother cake) - - was really special. Much to my surprise I’ve liked all of the white wines that I’ve tried - - in the past, I’d really disliked ALL white wines. In front of the home, where the matriarch still lives, is a tempting road leading off to a farmhouse where there are 7 ensuite rooms for rent around a large shared living room and terraces. I’d really like to stay there one day.
