Padua – Palazzo della Ragione

This great hall built in the 13th century once held the medieval law courts. The original frescoes by Giotto were destroyed in a fire, but the 15th century frescoes that replaced them were wonderful, covering every inch of the walls of the huge room with scenes from daily life, the signs of the zodiac, and religious and secular scenes. It also held the “stone of shame” where debtors were forced to sit, stripped nearly naked before being banished (better than execution, however) and an immense wooden “Trojan” horse.
