Ravenna – Dante’s Tomb

We paid our respects to the tomb of Dante Aligihieri, a simple white chapel beside a larger church. It turns out that he isn’t buried in the Santa Croce in Florence after all - - although he was born in Florence he actually died in Ravenna (where he went after the Florentines exiled him). Apparently, his remains were hidden in the Monastery of San Francesco in Ravenna (so the Florentines couldn’t take them back) and forgotten for centuries. A group of us ate lunch at the Ca’ de’Ven afterwards. We had wine (a mistake in the middle of the day!) and flat pannini-type sandwiches typical of the area.
