On the other hand, the bread in Italy has been hard to get used to. Although lovely and soft with a crisp crust, it is prepared without salt and served without butter so tastes very flat to our American taste buds. The struggle to force unwilling Italian waiters to give us butter has been entertaining (our insistence on having butter a clear sign that we are obnoxious American tourists).

Orvieto - Market Day
We continued to work on our art projects today. Before we began, many of us went to the market in the Piazza del Popolo. The veggies and fruit were similar to those I might find in Davis, but the meats and dried fish were very different, as were the many booths full of clothing at reasonable prices (all the shops in town seem to be geared toward tourists and are very pricey). We brought the food back to the convent and shared another wonderful picnic lunch. One difference in the food, now that I think about, it is the smell. Everything seems fresher and riper, exudes a wonderful scent and a full flavor.
