The Tour of Italy (Giro d'Italia) arrived in Orvieto today - - the whole town went cycle crazy! Most of the shopkeepers decorated their windows with flourishes and fans made of the distinctive pink newsprint of the Gazetto della Sport (sponsor of the race) which is also the color of the pink jersey that the previous day's winner will wear (manglia rosa). We walked the length of the town snapping pictures of the windows and then watched a parade of local men wearing gorgeous costumes representing their city quarter and occupational organizations. Great fun for us, but it seem insane for the bicyclists who have to ride up and then down at breakneck speeds the steep sides of the rock upon which Orvieto perches. And the whole thing accomplished on narrow roads paved in rough, uneven cobblestones
