Assisi – Sta Maria d’Angeli

This Bascilica is in the valley below the hill town of Assisi. It was erected where St Francis lived, worked and died in the early 13th century. Behind the overly fancy church (inappropriate, given St Francis' beliefs) is the rose garden in which Francis was supposed to have thrown himself (in penance for some temptation or other). The roses were said to have immediately lost their thorns never to grow them again. On the way to the garden was a statue of St Francis holding a bowl in which two charming white birds landed and were foraging for a snack.
