Denuta – Ceramics

The tour of the ceramic shop was fascinating. They make all but a few of their pieces on a wheel using clay dug from local hills and water from the Tiber river. We saw various people doing the steps they have been doing for as long as 50 years. The results were beautiful and incredibly complex. Despite my dislike of shopping and vow that I would buy nothing, I did buy a few things, as did everyone else. I love the fact that such beautiful things as these, and the glass tiles we saw in Ravenna, can be made from such humble materials - - clay, water, heat and the motion of the potter’s hands or sand, minerals, heat and the glass blower’s breath.
