Montone – Locanda di Capitano

We spent two days in the small hill town of Montone. The views from the top of the hill where we got on and off the bus are spectacular. The streets are narrow, winding cobbles (what else!) with a small square, church and so on - - a real town rather than a tourist destination. Most of the people in the group stayed in the wonderful Locanda di Capitano, however several of us were housed in apartments located in other buildings. A young man took three of us to ours, winding down steep alleys and through two tunnels, until we were completely turned around. When we entered our building it was dark and as cold as a refrigerator. Although my place was large and perfectly fine, there was something creepy about it. The other couple and I dumped our stuff and quickly met in the foyer to try to retrace our steps back to the hotel while it was fresh in our memories because we not at all sure we knew the way! The very expansive owner of the Locanda prepared a wonderful meal for all of us with all sorts of local specialties and wine. What a character! The intimate dining room of the place looked lovely (the most inviting I've seen on the trip). I would like to return and actually stay in the hotel someday, as it seemed to be a wonderful, comfortable place. The terraces were particularly lovely with wonderful music playing.
